How do you ask a client for a testimonial?
Ask after a result, not after an invoice: the third session, the end of a package, the day a project launches. Ask one question they can answer in a minute, such as what changed for them. Then ask permission to use their words, with their name or without it.
- Step 1
Pick the moment.
Right after something went well. A month later, the feeling has faded and the answer is vaguer.
- Step 2
Ask one question.
“What’s different for you since we started?” gets a story. “Would you write me a testimonial?” gets a blank page.
- Step 3
Make it short to answer.
A few sentences is plenty. Say so, so nobody thinks they owe you an essay.
- Step 4
Ask permission separately.
Can you use it on your page? With their full name, their first name, or neither?
- Step 5
Use their words as written.
Trim for length if you must, and never change what they meant.
On WorkWith, a client is asked once by email after their third session, or when a package is used up. What they write comes to you first, and you put it on your page in one tap or keep it private.
