Guides · Getting paid

How do you take payment before a session without seeming pushy?

Make paying part of booking, not a request that comes after it. When the price, the time and the card are on the same page, nobody reads it as pushy. They read it as how you work. What feels pushy is the email asking for money once the time is already agreed.

You pay up front at the dentist, the airline and the yoga studio, and none of them feel pushy. A payment request that turns up after the friendly part is over does.

Words that make it the normal way

  1. 1

    On your page

“Pick a time and pay for it in one go. If something comes up, you can move it up to 24 hours before at no charge.”

  2. 2

When somebody asks to pay later

“I take payment when a session is booked, for everyone. It keeps my calendar honest, and it means I never have to send you an invoice.”

  3. 3

    When a regular client asks

“Of course. I’ll send an invoice tonight. If you keep your card on file when you next book, it’ll be one tap.”

  4. 4

    Before a first conversation

“The first 20 minutes are free, so there’s nothing to pay. If we decide to work together, you’ll book the first session from the same page.”

Instead of this, try that

Instead ofTry
“Would you mind paying before we meet?”“You’ll pay when you pick the time.”
“I hate to ask, but…”The price and the time, in the same sentence.
“I’ll send you an invoice after.”“It’s paid when it’s booked, so there’s nothing to send.”

Say it once, on your page, and you won’t have to say it again.
