What does a good short bio look like?
A good bio fits in three lines: who you help and with what, one fact a stranger can check, and how you work. Thirty examples follow, across kinds of practice, each with a note on what it does that a longer bio doesn’t. Copy the shape, not the words.
Each bio is three sentences: who and what, the fact, the format. The note after it says what it does well.
- 1
Career coach
I help people leaving the armed forces find civilian work that uses what they already know. Twenty years in the Navy, six coaching. Sessions by video, every other week. Why it works: names a group nobody else names, and the fact that makes them trust it.
- 2
Executive coach
I help new directors stop doing their old job. Ran a 200-person operations team before I coached. Fortnightly sessions for six months. Why it works: the problem is one every new director recognizes in a second.
- 3
Life coach
I help people in their fifties decide what the next ten years are for. A career change of my own at 52. Six sessions, one a month. Why it works: the coach’s own story is the credential, in five words.
- 4
Interview coach
I help engineers explain their work to interviewers who aren’t engineers. Hired 80 people at two software companies. Two sessions the week before. Why it works: the format matches the urgency.
- 5
Business coach
I help one-person businesses double their price without losing their best clients. Doubled mine in 2021. Monthly sessions and a pricing review. Why it works: a number in the first line, and the coach has done it.
- 6
Therapist
I work with adults living with anxiety that’s started to shape their week. Licensed for 12 years. Weekly 50-minute sessions, in person or by video. Why it works: plain words a client would use, not a list of modalities.
- 7
Massage therapist
I treat runners and cyclists for the injuries that keep them off the road. Licensed for 11 years. Sixty minutes in my studio. Why it works: who it’s for is sharper than what technique is used.
- 8
Nutritionist
I help shift workers plan meals around nights. Registered, and a former night-shift nurse. A plan in two sessions and a check-in. Why it works: the background answers the doubt before it’s raised.
- 9
Yoga teacher
I teach desk workers to loosen their back in twenty minutes before work. Teaching since 2015. Online classes at 7am, Monday to Friday. Why it works: the time of day is the selling point, so it’s in the bio.
- 10
Personal trainer
I help new parents get strong enough to lift the car seat without their back complaining. Two children of my own. Three sessions a week at home. Why it works: a picture the reader can see.
- 11
Brand designer
I design for food businesses with one shop and big plans. Forty bakeries and cafés so far. Six to eight weeks, two rounds of changes. Why it works: a count of past clients does the work of a portfolio.
- 12
Web developer
I move independent shops off platforms they’ve outgrown without losing a week of sales. Fifteen moves since 2022. A fixed price after one call. Why it works: the fear is named and answered.
- 13
Copywriter
I write pages for therapists that sound like them. Six years writing for health practices. One page in two weeks. Why it works: the client’s worry, sounding wrong, is the promise.
- 14
Photographer
I photograph families once a year, at home, in the light they live in. Ten years, three hundred families. One morning, forty photographs. Why it works: the deliverable is counted.
- 15
Illustrator
I draw maps for books and board games. Twelve published so far. A sketch in a week, the final in a month. Why it works: the niche is narrow enough to remember.
- 16
Video editor
I edit long interviews into short clips people finish. Four years editing for podcasts. Ten clips a month. Why it works: says what the edit is for, not which software.
- 17
Pricing consultant
I help software companies under 20 people set prices they can defend. Former head of pricing at a payroll company. A three-week review, then a monthly call. Why it works: size of client, problem and credential in three lines.
- 18
HR consultant
I help companies hiring their first employee get the paperwork right. Ten years in HR at growing startups. A half day, then calls as needed. Why it works: the moment of need is specific: the first hire.
- 19
Bookkeeper
I keep the books for tradespeople, so tax season is an afternoon. Bookkeeping since 2014. Monthly, from your receipts and bank feed. Why it works: the result is in hours saved, which the reader feels.
- 20
Grant writer
I write grant applications for small arts charities. Raised £2m across 60 applications. One application at a time, priced per bid. Why it works: a total that’s easy to check.
- 21
Fundraising consultant
I help small charities run their first major donor campaign. Fifteen campaigns, none over a year. A campaign plan, then monthly support. Why it works: the time limit reassures.
- 22
Marketing consultant
I help independent clinics fill their diary without paying for ads. Worked with 30 clinics in four cities. A month’s plan and two follow-ups. Why it works: the constraint, no ads, is the hook.
- 23
Math tutor
I help eighth graders who’ve decided they’re bad at math get through algebra. A former middle school teacher. Weekly online lessons, an update to parents each month. Why it works: speaks to the parent who reads it.
- 24
Language tutor
I teach Spanish to adults moving to Spain. Born in Valencia, teaching for nine years. Two lessons a week until you land. Why it works: there’s an end date built in.
- 25
Music teacher
I teach adults who quit piano as children to play the piece they always wanted to. Twenty years teaching. Weekly lessons at my studio. Why it works: names a regret, and the fix for it.
- 26
Driving instructor
I teach nervous learners to pass first time. Ninety percent first-time passes last year. Two-hour lessons, picked up from home. Why it works: a pass rate is a fact a parent can ask about.
- 27
Speech coach
I help first-time speakers give a best man’s speech that gets laughs for the right reasons. Coached 120 weddings. Two sessions before the day. Why it works: funny, short, and the occasion is the niche.
- 28
Sleep consultant
I help parents of toddlers get back to a full night within two weeks. Certified, and a mother of three. A plan and two weeks of check-ins. Why it works: the deadline is the offer.
- 29
Astrologer
I read birth charts for people deciding something big. Twenty years of readings. A one-hour reading by video, recorded for you. Why it works: the decision is the reason to book, not the stars.
- 30
Genealogist
I trace family histories back to the first record I can find. Five hundred families traced. Research priced as a project, with a share up front. Why it works: the deliverable has a clear end.
What they leave out
- Adjectives about the person: passionate, dedicated, results-driven.
- A career history. One fact is more convincing than ten.
- Anything a reader would have to read twice.
