What do you do when a client goes quiet?
Send three messages and then stop: one a week after the last session, one a month after, and one at three months. Each is short, about them, and easy to answer. After the third, leave it. A client who wants to come back knows where you are.
- Step 1
At a week: the next step.
“Last time we got to the budget. Next I’d suggest the hiring plan. Here’s the link if you’d like a time.”
- Step 2
At a month: an open door.
“I haven’t heard from you in a while, and that’s fine. If you want to pick up where we left off, the link’s here.”
- Step 3
At three months: something useful.
A short piece of advice, an article you wrote, an answer to a question they asked. No ask attached.
- Step 4
Then stop.
Three messages is attentive. Five is chasing, and clients feel the difference.
What not to send
- “Just checking in”, which asks the client to do the work of replying.
- A discount to come back, which tells them the price was never the price.
- Anything that asks why they stopped. If they want to tell you, they will.
