Getting paid

Stripe needs to know who it is paying.

Your page can take a card as soon as you connect Stripe. Before Stripe moves money to anyone, it has to establish who they are, because it’s a regulated payments company.

Have these ready

  • Your legal name and date of birth.
  • Your address.
  • Part of a government identification number: in the United States, the last four digits of your Social Security number.
  • The bank account you want to be paid into: account and routing numbers in the United States, sort code and account number in the United Kingdom.

Most people are done in under 10 minutes. You answer Stripe directly, and we never see or store any of it.

Where the money goes

A client pays your account, not ours, and Stripe pays out to your bank on its own schedule. On a new account, the first payout usually takes a few days longer than the ones after it.

Two fees come off: Stripe’s own processing fee on each payment, and our 0.75% of each card payment. Stripe takes its fee before the money reaches your balance. Ours is shown on every payment record and totaled in Money.

If it says payouts are paused

Once money starts moving, Stripe sometimes asks for one more document, usually a photo of an identity document. Your clients can still pay you while that’s outstanding; Stripe holds the money until it accepts the document. Today tells you, with a button that goes straight to the question Stripe is asking.

Refunds

Return a paid invoice from Money, in full. A client who cancels in time gets their payment back on its own, and when somebody cancels late, Today asks whether to refund it or keep it. Our 0.75% comes back with any refund, in proportion. Stripe’s own fee on the original payment doesn’t.

This describes how the product works. It is not tax or financial advice, and what Stripe asks for can differ by country.
