Where the week goes
It’s Friday afternoon. You’ve worked every day since Monday, and you’d struggle to say how many of those hours somebody paid for. For one week, write down what you did, mark what was billed, and add it up on Sunday.
Print it and fill it in a line at a time as the week goes. A week rebuilt from memory on Friday leaves out the small jobs.
The five kinds of hour
Put one letter beside each entry. Only the first kind is paid for.
| Billed | A client is paying for this hour. |
| Winning | Answering an inquiry, writing a proposal, a call that might become work. |
| Admin | Invoices, chasing, scheduling, notes, filing, software. |
| Craft | Preparing, reading, training, work that makes the billed hours better. |
| Business | Your own marketing, accounts, tax, the website. |
The week
Give each thing you did its own line, with hours to the nearest half.
| Day | What you did | Kind | Hours |

| Total |
On Sunday
Add up the billed hours and divide by the total. That share is what a client paid for. Then answer these five questions.
- 01What share of the week was billed?
- 02Which single unbilled task took the most hours?
- 03Which of those hours could a client have done for you, on a page, without asking?
- 04Which of them could happen on a schedule instead of when you remember?
- 05What would the week look like if you moved two of those hours into billed ones?
The admin hours are the ones to cut
Nobody pays you for scheduling, confirmations, agreements, invoices or chasing. Behind one link, a client handles all of that in five taps, and whatever’s left reaches you each morning as a short list.
