Should you have a newsletter?

Yes, if you have one useful thing a month to say, a few people who’d want to read it, and an hour to write it. No, if you’d be writing to fill the slot. A newsletter that arrives with nothing in it teaches people to delete the next one.

Three questions

  1. 1

Do you have something to say each month?

Look at the last month’s client questions. If three of them would make a useful note, yes.

  2. 2

Is there anybody to say it to?

Past clients who said yes, people who asked to hear from you. Ten is enough to start.

  3. 3

    Do you have an hour?

A short note takes an hour to write well. If that hour comes out of client work, it has to be worth it.

Small is fine

A note of three hundred words, one idea, one link. No sections, no roundup, no design. People read short notes from people they know.

On WorkWith, a note written on Link has its own address on your page, sits in a feed at /notes/feed.xml, and can be emailed to the people who said yes with Email it. A newsletter and a blog in one.
