Should you offer a free first session?

No, offer a short free call instead. A free session gives away the work and teaches the client what it’s worth: nothing. A twenty-minute call to decide whether you’re the right person gives away nothing but the decision, and it ends with a paid booking or a polite no.

What the call is for

  • Is this the kind of problem I solve?
  • Do we want to work together?
  • What would the first paid session be about?

What it isn’t for

Solving the problem. If the call turns into a session, stop it kindly: “That’s the work itself. Let’s book it.”

The coaching setup on WorkWith starts with a discovery call of 20 minutes at no charge, beside the paid session. Should a discovery call be free? has the case both ways.
