Words to send · Being found and remembered

How to ask a client for a referral

At the moment they tell you something went well, in one sentence, with a link. “I’m really glad. If you know anybody else starting a new role, would you send them my page?” Name the kind of person, so they can think of someone, and make passing it on take ten seconds.

When to send it: Right after they tell you something went well.

In the moment

That’s great news, congratulations. If you know anybody else starting a new role, I’d be glad if you sent them my page: maya.workwith.page

After the work ends

Subject: Thank you

Hi Sam, Thank you for the last few months. It was a pleasure to see the new role come together. If you know anybody else stepping into their first management job, I’d be glad to help them too. Here’s my page to pass on. Maya

Why it works

  • It rides on a moment of good news, when they want to say thank you.
  • A named kind of person is easier to act on than “anyone who might need me”.
  • A link they can paste makes the referral one step, not three.

What not to say

  • Asking everybody at once in a newsletter.
  • Asking before the work has gone well.
